3 Things to Do Before Labor Day

After Labor Day, summer starts to wind down as the weather gets cooler and fall sets in. That means you’ll want to get in as much summer fun as possible before the holiday! Here is a list of fun things for you to do before Labor Day:

1. Enjoy the Outdoors at Night

Take a nighttime walk, go stargazing, or take a weekend off for a camping trip. No matter what you decide to do, be sure to take advantage of the outdoors while the weather is still warm enough!

2. Have an Outdoor Meal

There’s nothing like enjoying a meal outside. It’s too nice outside to stay indoors, so bring your meal out onto your patio or porch. You can even bring a blanket out on the grass for a picnic.

3. Ride Your Bike

Go on a bike ride around your neighborhood or park. Map out a path with your family and spend an entire afternoon riding your bike.

How will you be ending the summer? Share your thoughts in the comments.

Road Trips Made More Fun Thanks to Checkered Flag Volkswagen

While packing for a family road trip it is important to think about your sanity.  I don't mean making sure to pack your medications (although that thought has crossed my mind a time or two), but planning for the inevitable, the "Are we there yet" question.  Taking 2 small kiddos on a cross country trip in the car is a death defying feat.  I started thinking about ways to minimize those thoughts of duct taping the children's mouths shut-ha ha I hope you know I am kidding- and figuring out more constructive methods of making the trip go by faster.  I found some fun games that can be played.

Top 10 Road Trip Games-How To Survive Your Summer Vacation

By Tori Tellem, Contributor

It never, ever fails: Within 30 minutes of stuffing the car to its gills with luggage and people for a getaway, you're left wondering how you can get away from everyone's complaints of boredom. And to think, only hours more to go! Despite popular in-car entertainment such as DVD players, truth be told, not everyone's car is equipped to offer the convenience of penguins or Dora as a babysitter for the next 50, 100 or 200 miles.

That's why we've compiled a list of road trip games that don't require any tools, paper or accessories beyond the open road. We have suggestions for passengers at every age level, although each game can be tweaked accordingly.

I Spy

Probably the classic make-time-go-by game of all time. One person looks around and chooses an object that the others have to guess, with their only clue being these words: "I spy with my little eye something that begins with (insert the first letter of the object's name)." Or the clue can be the object's color. The player who guesses the object gets to go next. The tricky part? It's not fair to "spy" something that's whizzing by the car at highway speeds. A landmark (mountain range, forest) that will be in the players' view for a few minutes is best.

20 Questions

"Are we there yet? Are we there yet?" Only 18 more times to go! In 20 Questions, whomever goes first thinks of, well, anything. The first question is always, "Animal, vegetable or mineral?" After that, the players can ask pointed questions to try and guess - go around the car in a circle asking for clues such as, "Does it bark?" or "Can you peel it?" for example, although the answer to those questions can only be "yes" or "no." If you reach the 20th question without a winner, everyone has one last chance to figure it out before the "thing" is revealed and another person starts a fresh round.

License Plates

There are many ways to play with license plates, depending on the age of your kids. Young participants can call out letters in alphabetical order; the first one to Z wins. Next, have them look for doubles - or better yet, triples! - of letters and/or numbers in the plates. The one who has the most at the end of the day/trip wins. Older kids can "collect" out-of-state plates they see. (Make it tougher by going in alphabetical order.) Or they can try to build words or phrases using the letter sequence in the plates. A plate with the letters E, F and T, for example, might become the word "effort" (using those letters to start the word, in the middle and at the end). Those could make "Ed's Favorite Tacos" if you're running with phrases.

Slug-a-Bug

The concept is that players keep track of how many Volkswagen Beetles they spot on the road. We've heard of variations in which the game is limited to New or vintage Beetles, or versions where the older Bugs are worth more. In the game's original version you were supposed to punch your seat mate when you spotted a Bug, but most parents find that any game that involves hitting can get out of hand pretty quickly. So keep score some other way - tapping your seat mate, counting on your fingers (first to 10 wins) or something more in keeping with the Bug's peaceful hippie history.

Where's the Alphabet?
Perform this as teams or solo players. You'll want to utilize road signs, billboards, shop names - any reading material outside the window qualifies as long as it's spotted on your side of the car. (If you're the front-seat passenger, focus on the right.) You'll be looking for every letter of the alphabet, in alphabetical order, although the letter can be located anywhere in the word. Say there is a fruit stand with a sign for Granny Smith apples - there's your A. The exit for the Brooklyn Bridge would cover B, Road Closed is C and so on. First one to the letter Z wins. If you see "Road Closed," however, you'll probably be happy to have the nine other games listed here.

Name That Tune

As with the classic TV game show, the winner here is the one who figures out the name of the "mystery song" first. For those with singing/whistling/humming talent, this can be as much karaoke as a guessing game. Choose a theme for the game, such as show tunes, movie or TV themes, or Justin Timberlake. (Good luck, adults.) The winner gets to be the singer for the next round. If no one can carry a tune in a bucket, then try guessing the songs on the radio. Really want to mix it up? Hit the "seek" button so no one gets an unfair advantage from sticking to one particular station's format.

The Picnic Game

A memory builder for all ages. One player says, "I went to a picnic Saturday and I brought..." then says a picnic favorite that begins with the letter A, like apples. The next player repeats the opening phrase, and after "...I brought" they repeat the A item then add one that begins with B: "I brought an apple and some bananas." The third player repeats the opener, the A and the B portions, and then adds something that begins with C. Get it? Can your travelers get through the alphabet, remembering all the items everyone contributed? Try keeping track of 23 items plus figuring out what you can take to a picnic that starts with X!

Count the...

Probably even the most enthusiastic young'ns will catch on to this being busywork, but for awhile it'll be all they'll think about! And there is a bonus: Interest is likely to reignite on its own shortly after it stalls. Count the... can be anything: cows, telephone poles, headlights, train cars, blue pickup trucks - you name it. Shouting out the thing to keep track of is all that is required.

Tunnels

This one is simple: When you come to a tunnel, see who can hold their breath the longest. True, it may not be one best played by the driver (lightheadedness, anyone?), but everyone else can give it a go. We used to be amazed at our own skill at this as kids.

Geography Lesson

Geography is much more fun outside the classroom, isn't it? For this game, choose countries, cities or states (or go nuts and try rivers and lakes or capitals). Let's say your theme is states. The first player names a location, and the next player has to rattle off another state that starts with the last letter of the previous player's state. Therefore, if it were Michigan, the next state would have to start with N, like Nebraska. The A could be Alaska, and so on. Note: This one makes our brain hurt.

High Volume Traffic Expected for Hampton Roads This Weekend

Watch out, Checkered Flag fans.  The roads are about to get crazy.  4th of July travel madness is on the way.

AAA predicts record travel in Va. for holiday
The Associated Press

AAA Mid-Atlantic is predicting a record number of Virginians will travel this Fourth of July weekend, despite higher gas prices.

The auto club estimates 1.16 million Virginians will travel between Wednesday and Sunday, July 6. That would be a 1.9 percent increase over last Fourth of July weekend and the first increase since 2011.

More than 1 million of those travelers are expected to drive, even though gas costs about 16 cents per gallon more than it did a year ago. The average price in Virginia is $3.49 for a gallon of regular unleaded gas.

Air travel is also expected to increase slightly, with fliers taking advantage of fares that are 5 percent lower than last Fourth of July.

AAA says the travel increase reflects a boost in consumer confidence.

Will Flying Cars be Available Soon?

Is the flying really going to happen in our lifetime?

When I was a child, I was certain we'd be flying to the grocery store by now.  But, as fast as technology is changing, somehow we are still glued to the ground.  Well, maybe not for long.

Terrafugia wants to build hybrid flying car
Computer controlled, plug-in hybrid concept would require as little as 5 hours training to fly.

By Paul Eisenstein of The Detroit Bureau

Flying cars have long been the stuff of science fiction, though plenty of entrepreneurs and visionaries have struggled to make the concept a reality ? including no less than the original Henry Ford.

Several projects are now underway and one, started by a group of MIT alumni, is rapidly working its way towards reality. But the former college cronies apparently are dreaming about taking their original Transition flying car a giant leap further into the wild blue yonder with an even more advanced design they've dubbed the TF-X.

To start with, the four-seater would be capable of vertical take-offs and landings. And since it would largely be controlled by a central computer network, the TF-X would, claims a Terrafugia promotional video, require a pilot/driver to have as little as five hours of training, a slight fraction of what it now takes to get the most basic private pilot's license.

Oh, and if that isn't appealing enough, the team says their newest flying car design would use an environmentally friendly plug-in hybrid powertrain.

The Massachusetts-based Terrafugia has been drawing plenty of attention to itself thanks to the Transition, a $280,000 flying car that has been slowly working its way through the complex product development and federal regulatory process. Just 19 feet long, it was designed to fit inside a typical suburban garage once its 27-foot wings were folded up, allowing it to drive on any conventional road.

"Don't think of it as a car that flies," suggested Carl Dietrich, one of the MIT students now serving as Terrafugia's CEO. "Think of it as a plane that drives."

Perhaps, but beyond the ability to fold up those wings, the Terrafugia would operate pretty much like any aircraft, needing a long runway to get airborne. With the TF-X, the company is moving closer to the sort of craft one might envision the sci-fi cartoon family, the Jetsons, would own.

For one thing, Terrafugia claims the four-seater could get airborne from a level clearing of as little as 100 feet, rotating its twin wing-mounted propeller motors to a vertical position. Airborne, they would rotate back to a conventional, forward position ? much like the bigger Osprey flown by the U.S. military.

Once in the air, the TF-X is envisioned as capable of reaching 200 mph and delivering a full 500 miles of range ? plus reserves ? enough for a quick jaunt from Washington, D.C. to Boston, or from Los Angeles to San Francisco.

The craft could be flown manually by a licensed pilot, or essentially flown on an advanced autopilot system requiring only minimal training. The computer network it would plug into, Terrafugia claims, would automatically sidestep crowded air lanes, as well as bad weather, and could land the craft even if the pilot were to become incapacitated. Should a more serious problem occur, the TF-X is outfitted with its own parachute.

So, TF-X "should be statistically safer than driving a modern automobile," the company asserts.

The craft could prove particularly appealing to green-minded flying enthusiasts thanks to its unusual plug-in hybrid powertrain. In total, it will be able to produce 1,500 horsepower, 600 from each of the electric motors driving the propellers, and 300 from the gasoline engine that will serve as a generator when the TF-X's battery pack runs down. Possible Beach Crowd Could Have Major Impact on Local Travel

Checkered Flag fans, beware.  If you have plans to spend any of the upcoming weekend at the Virginia Beach oceanfront, you may need to adjust your traveling plans.

Police: Weekend access to Oceanfront to be limited
By Margaret Matray
The Virginian-Pilot

Major entry points to the Oceanfront will be closed or limited to inbound traffic Friday and Saturday nights in order to reduce the number of cars in the resort area, Beach police announced Tuesday.

Police have identified this coming weekend as a possible prefinals beach gathering for college students.

Depending on traffic volume Friday and Saturday nights, it?s likely that all eastbound traffic on Interstate 264 will be redirected westbound, police said via a post on the department?s Facebook page. Vehicles will not be able to exit I-264 until they reach Lynnhaven Parkway.

Those visiting the Oceanfront will be able to enter the area via northbound General Booth Boulevard, eastbound Virginia Beach Boulevard, eastbound Laskin Road and southbound Shore Drive.

Street closures and traffic diversion will affect most of Atlantic Avenue.

Police are encouraging the public to make arrangements ahead of time. Those visiting the resort area should arrive early and expect delays when they leave.

Last year?s college beach event was held the last weekend in April. As many as 40,000 people packed the Oceanfront, and police made more than 100 arrests. Most charges were misdemeanors and traffic summonses related to seat belt and liquor law violations, disorderly conduct and public drunkenness.

This year, Virginia Beach Police Chief Jim Cervera said his department has prepared for the weekend as if it's the Fourth of July. The department will increase staffing, with an emphasis on foot patrols.

KFC Debuts New Product-Drumstick Corsage

It is prom season at the local Hampton Roads high schools and Checkered Flag and their family of new and used car dealerships want to be there to support your family.  With the newest in trends, who ever knows what is up to date or "hip"?

Kentucky Fried Chicken wants to be a part of your family traditions and has introduced the "drumstick corsage".  That is right ladies and gentlemen, you heard right, the corsage with a piece of chicken hanging off of it.  No, really, this is no April fool's joke.  This is a real thing.

KFC Debuts Chicken Drumstick Corsage

It's a rite of passage for many, and KFC wants to be there.

KFC drumstick corsage KFC
This year in a marketing stunt for prom KFC is selling corsages that can be mounted with drumsticks.

The fried chicken purveyor has debuted the first (to our knowledge) chicken drumstick corsage to add a little poultry to the prom this year.

For just $20, buyers will receive a corsage kit from a Louisville, Ky. florist, which includes a $5 KFC gift card that can be used for a drumstick of one's choice?Extra Crispy, Kentucky Grilled Chicken or Original Recipe. (The site advises whichever best matches the dress. We suggest whatever's least greasy.)

Act fast, though, because only 100 corsages are available.

Caveat emptor: KFC's video for the promotion depicts a young man leaning in for the kiss during a slow dance. His date leans in too... but for some bites of chicken.

Source: [nbcnews.com]

Now I have seen everything.  Chime in Checkered Flag fans, what are your thoughts on this new product?

I guess if the date is going poorly, then you at least have something to nibble on!

VW Golf GTE debuts in Geneva

Checkered Flag VW has been promoting the GTI for years, and many have listened, but come on ya'll - now it is coming from the pros.  Those people that make it their living to talk about cars night and day are now saying that everyone needs to own a VW Golf/GTI

Volkswagen Golf GTE is mean, green eco machine
By Steven J. Ewing

I have this theory that keeps coming up when recommending new cars to people: "Just buy a GTI." Seriously. It's a perfect little hot hatch, with a comfortable, well-appointed interior, and the sort of dynamics that make it a nice everyday driver while still offering gobs of fun when the roads get interesting. It's basically the perfect car to me.

But with this new crop of electrified vehicles, my theory hasn't stood ? until now. Presented here at the Geneva Motor Show, Volkswagen is introducing the Golf GTE, a plug-in hybrid version of my perennial favorite hot hatch. It couples a 1.4-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine (on its own good for 148 horsepower) with an electric motor that offers an additional 101 hp of thrust. And when moving in tandem, the system's peak output is rated at 201 hp and 258 pound-feet of torque. VW says the Golf GTE can hit speeds of up to 81 miles per hour on electric power alone, and with the gas engine giving some assist, will sprint to 62 mph in a respectable 7.6 seconds, with a top speed of 135 mph.

Visually, the GTE looks the part of a GTI, though the hotter car's red accents have been replaced with eco-ish blue ones. Standard rollers measure 16 inches, but Volkswagen will offer 17- and 18-inch wheels.

It all sounds pretty great, but sadly, Volkswagen currently has no plans to offer the Golf GTE in the US market. That's a shame. Guess you'll just have to buy a regular GTI in the meantime. No, really ? do it.

Source: [autoblog]

Okay, so the article was a mixed bag of emotions.  On one side, I really want to get into the green scene and get the electric car, but, with US regulations that will not be possible.  I think that everyone should just do as the very smart writer suggests, and go out and buy a new VW GTI at Virginia Beach's VW Dealer, Checkered Flag VW.

For more information on the GTI and VW Golf, call (757) 687-3447 today.  Come in and test drive this little beast for yourself.  See what all the talk is about.
