Volkswagen Golf GTD coming to the U.S. - report!

Diesel engines are becoming increasingly popular in the United States, so Volkswagen has decided to bring the Golf GTD to America.

Set to arrive in 2015, the Golf GTD features a 2.0-liter turbodiesel engine that develops 184 HP and 280 lb-ft of torque. When connected to a six-speed manual transmission, the
model accelerates from 0-62 mph in 7.5 seconds before hitting a top speed of 143 mph.

According to Golf product manager Andreas Valbuena, "We see it as a very important part of our full range of offerings, a technology halo for our diesel technology."

The Golf GTD is expected to cost approximately $27,000 when it arrives in the United States as a 2016 model.

Volkswagen Group of America continues further investment in Tennessee!

Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (VWGoA) today celebrated the grand opening of a $40 million Southeast Regional Distribution Center (SERDC) in Roane County, Tenn. The 459,000-plus square-foot facility will be used for distributing domestic auto parts to global markets for the Chattanooga-made Passat.

Addressing the need for increased infrastructure, the Regional Distribution Center facility will begin as a redistribution center to service warehouses and will later expand to include a parts distribution center. The redistribution Master Depot will support the U.S., Canada, Mexico and Germany. The parts distribution operation will help improve service parts order delivery times to over 110 dealers in the surrounding regions.

“This new facility serves as tangible proof of the clear commitment that Volkswagen Group of America has to meeting the needs of our dealers and our growing customer base,” said Anu Goel, Vice President of Parts and Vehicle Logistics, Volkswagen Group of America. “Our continued investment in the U.S. market affirms that Volkswagen Group of America is dedicated to the communities in which we do business.”

Highlighting its commitment to the North American market, Volkswagen Group plans to invest more than $5 billion in North America over the next three years in new products, technologies and infrastructure aimed at helping the company reach its long-term goals for the region.

“I want to thank Volkswagen for this new facility and all that it means to Roane County and Tennessee,” said Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam. “Focusing on growth in existing companies is an important part of our strategy, and we appreciate the additional investment in our state.”

“I am proud to be here today to celebrate Volkswagen’s $40 million global distribution center in Roane County, and want to thank the auto company for investing in our community,” said Roane County Executive Ron Woody. “Our residents here are friendly, and our workforce energized and loyal. Volkswagen’s choice of Roane County was not only a good choice, but the right choice.”

A vital part of VWGoA’ s long-term growth commitment involves serving the needs of retail networks and consumers. VWGoA operates five parts warehouses in the United States, the new location is a critical addition to the network and its strategic location in the Southeast will help ensure the ability to distribute parts faster and better serve the needs of our customers.

Volkswagen’s Think Blue. environmental sustainability efforts have enabled the warehouse to earn Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) silver certification. The building’s eco-conscious features include superior insulation, water efficient landscaping, and sourcing regional materials in construction.

The Southeast Regional Distribution Center marks Volkswagen’s fifth building in the United States to achieve LEED certification and the first among Volkswagen’s warehouses. The others include Volkswagen’s Headquarters in Herndon, Va.; the Volkswagen Chattanooga Manufacturing Factory in Chattanooga, Tenn.; Volkswagen’s Electronic Research Lab (ERL) in Belmont, Calif.; and Volkswagen’s Test Center California (TCC) in Oxnard, Calif.

As part of the grand opening celebration, Volkswagen Group of America announced a $2,500 donation to the Roane County Alliance’s Education Matters! initiative, which supports local students and promotes opportunities for post-secondary education.

Volkswagen builds 30 millionth Golf!

It’s no McDonald’s hamburger, but 30 million sold is still something to shout about.

That’s how many Volkswagen Golfs have been produced since the little hatchback went on sale in 1974, the automaker announced last week.

Originally intended to replace the Beetle, which continued to be sold until 2003, the Golf is entering is seventh generation this year.

The car was also known as the Rabbit for many years in the USA.

The ceremonial 30 millionth car built was a BlueMotion diesel that’s good for nearly 75 mpg in European fuel economy tests.

The Golf eclipsed the Beetle in sales several years ago. The original People’s Car topped out at just under 22 million units before production ended in Mexico a decade ago.

But the VW sales staff has its work cut out for it if it ever wants to see the Golf at number one of all time.

Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand delivers 2.41 million vehicles in period to May!

The Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand delivered 2.41 (January – May 2012: 2.29; +5.3 percent) million vehicles in the first five months of this year. The brand grew deliveries by 5.5 percent for the month of May, handing over 503,100 (May 2012: 476,900) vehicles to customers.

“Overall the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand is showing stable development despite continuing economic uncertainty, although the trends vary quite significantly. While deliveries in China, for example, continued to rise, unit sales for May in other regions such as Western Europe declined”, Christian Klingler, Board Member for Sales and Marketing for the Volkswagen Group and the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand, said in Wolfsburg on Tuesday.

The Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand delivered 688,900 (743,000; -7.3 percent) on the overall European market from January to May, of which 351,400 (378,700; -7.2 percent) units were handed over in Western Europe (excluding Germany). Deliveries in the home market of Germany were also down at 229,300 (255,900; -10.4 percent) vehicles. In contrast, development in Central and Eastern Europe was stable, with Volkswagen Passenger Cars delivering 108,200 (108,400; -0.2 percent) vehicles in the region. The company handed over 62,600 (65,300; -4.2 percent) vehicles to customers in Russia.

In the Asia-Pacific region, the brand grew deliveries by 17.6 percent from January to May, with 1.07 (0.91) million customers taking delivery of a new car, of which 980,000 (819,300; +19.6 percent) units were handed over in China, the region’s largest single market. In India, on the other hand, deliveries dropped to 26,600 (31,100; -14.6 percent) units.

In the North America region, Volkswagen Passenger Cars increased deliveries by 4.4 percent to 252,700 (242,100) units, of which 169,800 (170,600; -0.4 percent) models were handed over to new owners in the United States. In the South America region, deliveries declined by 2.9 percent in the period to May, and ran at 303,100 (312,200) units, of which 227,100 (229,900; -2.1 percent) vehicles were handed over in Brazil.

Watch the 2015 Volkswagen Golf R testing on the ring!

Spotted running hot laps around the Nürburgring, the next-generation Volkswagen Golf R looks plenty capable of occupying the top spot in the Golf lineup.

We assume the new Golf R will use a turbocharged 2.0 liter four-cylinder engine mated to either a six-speed manual or a dual-clutch transmission. Expect the production version to retain all-wheel drive and to have north of the previous MK6 R's 256 hp.

Running in light camouflage, the car should be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

Sales should start in Europe in 2014 while North American customers will most likely have to wait another year to get their hands on it.

Volkswagen introduces R-Line accoutrements for new Golf!

Volkswagen has rolled out three new R-Line packages for the Golf, comprising exterior and interior kits along with a Sport Pack. Any one of them can be had on the Comfortline or Highline trims, but for different prices. The exterior add-ons include logos, new front and rear bumpers and a rear spoiler, new side sills and a black diffuser. It runs $1,297  on the Highline, $1,538 US on the Comfortline.

The interior package includes items like aluminum-look instrument and door panels, new door sills, a black headliner, stainless steel pedal caps and sports seats. It goes for 640 euros on the Highline trim or $1,231 on Comfortline. You can add Vienna leather to that, upgrading from cloth, for either $2,287 on the Highline or $2,756 on the Comfortline.

Finally, the Sport package gets a new suspension and revised steering, plus tinted windows. It's the most economical of the lot, needing just $560 for both Comfortline and Highline. The Salvador wheels in either 17- or 18-inch sizes can finish the whole thing off.

Cars.com Family Reviews the 2013 Volkswagen Passat TDI!

The 2013 Volkswagen Passat TDI is one of the most family-friendly midsize sedans I've ever driven with its large backseat, ample trunk and ah-mazing fuel economy. Its got lots to offer and a somewhat moderate price, but I had mixed feelings about this clean-diesel-powered sedan.

EXTERIOR
The 2013 Passat TDI doesn't look a bit different from the non-diesel model, save for the badge in the back. It's a long, streamlined sedan with clean lines and a simple aesthetic; it looks large when compared to other midsize sedans in its class as well.

One of the best things about the exterior design is how easy it is to get in and out of this car. The door handles aren't too high, and the door openings are generous. This is good news for parents who assist children into their child-safety seats, and it's especially convenient for those who are constantly loading/unloading infant carriers in and out of their base.

There's no need to pack light if you've got the Passat. With a stroller in the trunk, I still had plenty of room for grocery bags. The trunk has great cutouts in the walls where I stored my reusable shopping bags, first-aid kit and an umbrella. Bring on the double strollers, golf bags, beach chairs or even a group of clowns to jump out of the trunk, the Passat can take it, I swear.

The gas-powered Passat has a couple of options under the hood, but the TDI model is equipped with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. Don't be discouraged by its 140 horsepower; it's peppy enough and its 236 pounds-feet of torque makes it more fun to drive than many hybrids. As someone who usually gets below-average mileage due to hastiness and stop-and-go traffic in Los Angeles, I was floored when I checked the trip computer more than once and found numbers higher than 40 mpg. The Passat TDI gets an EPA-estimated 31/43 mpg city/highway, and I maintained those for the week. The real gem was never visiting the gas station to fuel up during my test drive. One less errand with a demanding toddler is one of the biggest conveniences of all.

SENSE AND STYLE
Family Friendly (Not Really, Fair, Great, Excellent): Excellent
Fun-Factor (None, Some, Good Times, Groove-On): Some

INTERIOR
The Passat TDI's interior is huge. This is one sedan that actually delivers on its roomy specs and ample legroom. My husband was able to recline in the front passenger seat, and my daughter sitting behind him in the backseat still couldn't reach the seatback to kick it. Families will love how roomy and spacious it is inside, and if you don't have child-safety seats, a family of five will be quite comfortable in this five-seater.

2015 VW Golf to Debut at 2013 New York Auto Show!

6a00d83451b3c669e2017d41c7c22e970c-800wi

Volkswagen's updated GTI bowed at the 2013 Geneva International Motor Show earlier this month, and its Golf counterpart will meet the public at the 2013 New York International Auto Show this week.

The 2015 Golf will grow in size but be lighter and more fuel efficient than its predecessor. New safety features include collision avoidance and lane departure warning systems; an updated multimedia system will also join the cabin.

The base TSI model, diesel-powered TDI version and the sporty GTI variant will be unveiled at the show and go on sale during the first half of 2014. The TSI and GTI will use a new version of the VW's turbocharged four-cylinder. No word yet on when the U.S. will see the Golf Variant announced last week.

Auto show organizers claim there will be "more than 60 newly revealed cars, trucks and concepts" at the show; press days start March 27.

New Social Media App from Volkswagen Aims to Maximize Fun on Every Drive!

Smileage_0005_dubcast_mid

Volkswagen of America and Google today announced their partnership on “Volkswagen Smileage,” a new social media application built using a suite of Google products and platforms. The app launches later this year and will allow people to record and share how much fun they’re having while on the road, through a new metric called “smileage.” Users can share their road trip experiences dynamically through photos, videos, and social commentary via interactive maps. In addition, Smileage users are rewarded for connecting with others that they encounter along the way, through a re-imagination of the classic “Punch Dub” game.

“Volkswagen owners have demonstrated to us again and again that they are a very active community of fans that love to talk about their cars and the roads they travel,” said Kevin Mayer, Vice President of Marketing, Volkswagen of America, Inc. “Now, thanks to our partnership with Google on building this new social media application, we have a way for them to do so while doing exactly what they enjoy: Being in their cars. Whether they’re taking the kids to soccer camp or setting off with friends on a weekend camping trip, Volkswagen Smileage gives them a way to connect and share their experiences with their friends, family, and others. What’s more, this app will be available to everyone and work with all cars, so everybody can have a little bit of VW in their life, regardless of what car they drive.”

How Volkswagen Smileage Works
Smileage is a simple-to-use, smart phone-based application and web service, and will be made available first on Android phones. To start using Smileage, a driver simply needs to sign in with their Google account and ensure that their smart phone is synced with their car. If the driver chooses, the app can automatically connect each time the car is started.

Drivers can choose from “passive” or “active” modes in the app. Neither mode allows any driver interaction while on the road, but instead works seamlessly in the background. The app measures the fun factor of each trip using a metric called smileage, based on signals such as weather, traffic, location, time, and social interactions; so, for example, a long drive on a sunny Saturday afternoon might accumulate more smileage than a morning commute in the snow. You can use it with any car, not just Volkswagen vehicles.

For people who enjoy a more visual and real-time approach to documenting their travels on the road, the “Trip Mode” of Smileage can be used. This allows for a more customizable experience: A drive can be named, passengers can be tagged, and any photos and videos taken by passengers on the road can be automatically added to an interactive map. Users can chose to share this map with friends and family, allowing them to see the trip as it unfolds. Once the trip is over, Smileage will create a summary that a driver can share with whomever they choose, or keep entirely to themselves.

Volkswagen Smileage will be launched in beta in the coming months.

Volkswagen reports 30th consecutive month of sales growth!

Germancaryard1

Volkswagen of America, Inc. (VWoA) today reported 31,456 units delivered in February, a 2.9 percent increase over prior year sales and the best February since 1973.

"February's sales results and 30 consecutive months of growth reflects increasing consumer interest in our products," said Jonathan Browning, President and CEO, Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. “With a full range of fuel-efficient vehicles, seven of which deliver more than 40 mpg on the highway and the best start to a year in 29 years, we anticipate continued strong demand for our vehicles into the spring selling season.”

Jetta sedan, the volume leader for Volkswagen, delivered 10,398 units. Jetta SportWagen closed the month with 1,570 units, up 37.2 percent versus the prior year. The Jetta TDI SportWagen was recently named the 2013 Best Overall Value of the Year in the Compact Crossover/Wagon Class by IntelliChoice.

The Chattanooga-built Passat continued to deliver strong results with 7,532 units sold and 29.6 percent of those were diesel.

The Beetle and Beetle Convertible delivered a combined 2,991 and 705 units, respectively, for the month. Volkswagen recently unveiled the Beetle GSR at the 2013 Chicago Auto Show. The GSR (Gelb Schwarzer Renner or “Yellow Black Racer”), will go on sale this fall and will include an upgraded version of the award-winning EA888 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder TSI® engine that generates 210 horsepower. With this new model, Volkswagen has re-interpreted the 1970s GSR for the modern era. Volkswagen recently announced plans to produce the next generation EA888 engines in a brand-new, $550 million engine plant in Silao, Mexico.

Volkswagen also announced at the Chicago Auto Show that it will offer two limited-edition GTI models—the GTI Wolfsburg Edition and GTI Driver’s Edition. Both editions will be offered in limited quantities for the final model year of the sixth-generation hot-hatch. The first to go on sale is the GTI Wolfsburg Edition, which will arrive in dealerships in March, with a starting price of $25,095. The Driver’s Edition will arrive the second quarter of 2013, with a starting price of $29,695.

The Golf saw a 44.1 percent increase in February with 1,720 units delivered. As previously announced, the next generation “A7” Golf will be produced at the company’s manufacturing plant in Puebla, Mexico beginning in the first half of 2014. This latest move reinforces the Volkswagen’s commitment to the North American market, where it will invest more than $5 billion over the next three years.

Volkswagen’s high-mileage, clean diesel TDI models accounted for 22.4.percent of sales in February, a 10.9 percent increase over the prior year.
