Bob was great! I never felt pressured or that I was being taken advantage of throughout my car buying process. I felt as though I really was getting a fair and honest deal. I went to another dealership and was hounded over and over about buying a used car with 25k+ miles with less features for close to the same price. Even after I said I was just browsing and not looking to purchase tonight I was asked to sit down and talk financing. Needless to say I did not go back to that dealership. I went to checkered flag and was greeted by Bob. He was awesome! I was able to take my time and ask questions. Bob pointed out the differences in the models of vehicles and allowed me to make my own decisions without trying to get me into something more expensive. He truly listened when I told him what I was looking for. I did my financial paperwork with Lee, it was quick and painless. I was in and out within 45 minutes. I had prepared to spend all night there waiting but walked out less than 2 hours from when I walked in. Checkered flag gave me a great deal with the car, warranties, and maintenance plans. I am very happy with all aspects. Lee and Bob did a great job.

VW Concept Cars: Creating Dream Machines

Red-electric-vw-microbus-showroom-3

Car designing and dreaming—they go hand in hand. Every now and then, designers have to take out their crystal balls, gaze into uncharted territory and ask “what if?”

What if we created an all-electric Beetle? What if we made it a hardtop convertible? Oh, and while we’re at it, what if we updated the Volkswagen Microbus but gave it a zero-emissions electric powertrain?

The answer to all those “what ifs”? Concept cars—the dream machines that headline auto shows and generate all those “I want one!” reactions. Over the years, Volkswagen has arguably produced some of the coolest and most innovative concepts in the business.

Let’s turn back the clock to January 1994: Designers at the hip Volkswagen design studio in California dreamed up the Concept One, a fresh take on the classic VW Beetle. VW unveiled their creation at that year’s Detroit Auto Show, and it became an instant hit. Showgoers screamed, “Build it!” Volkswagen listened, and four years later the concept car went into production as the New Beetle.

“Concept cars are a vital ingredient in our design process at Volkswagen,” says Kevin Joostema, Manager of Product Marketing and Strategy for Volkswagen of America, Inc. “They let us test out ideas on the customer and get vital feedback before we decide whether or not to turn a concept—or maybe just an element of it—into production reality.”

During last year’s Geneva Motor Show in Switzerland, Volkswagen spotlighted its forward-thinking Bulli concept, which took an innovative look at the emblematic VW Microbus of the 1950s. But this reinvention is more robust, more compact—and it runs on electric power.

Then there was the hip, sporty E-Bugster concept, a zero-emissions pure-electric Beetle with a removable hardtop and convertible roof, which debuted at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January.

“Concept cars not only allow our designers to put forward fresh new ideas, they also allow customers, the media, even our own executives to tell us what they think,” Boldea says.

We purchased a 2012 Volkswagen Jetta S. last weekend. Our experience from beginning to end was stellar. It all started when Lamont approached us asking if he could help us. My husband and I explained that we were interested in the Jetta S model on sale for $13,990. He quickly and voluntarily explained that this was the purchase price and that it did not include taxes, tags, processing, etc. My husband and I agreed that showed a great deal of honesty in the sales person. He was completely upfront about the cost. He did a great job at pointing out the car's features. He explanined what it was equipment with and what it was not equipped with. We test drove one of the service loaners that were at the front of the dealership. Lamont allowed us to test drive the car on our own, which made my husband and I feel like we could formulate our opinions without having to worry about pressure from a salesman.

When we returned from our test drive, Lamont met us and gave us the opportunity to ask questions. When he sensed that we are serious about the car, he told us that there were 3 Jetta's in the back that have not been driven much and had their full warranty period in tack. He said the loaner cars had more mileage and had about 3 or 4 months of warranty used. This impressed my husband and I a great deal that he did not try to push a service loaner car to us. Again, it spoke to his honesty.

When we went to Lamont's office, he was quick at getting our purchase processed, the credit checks done, and getting us to the finance associate. While all that was going on, he had the car getting cleaned and ready for us to drive off the lot. The whole purchase from beginning to end happened quickly. It was a very customer focused process.

Not only was Lamont a truly wonderful sales person, but he was very personable and easy to work with. Lamont did not hassle us at all. He made sure he gave us the space we needed to make our decision. He is a very polished salesman. Not only are we bragging about our new car, but we are also bragging about Lamont to our friends.

New vehicle plant opens in China

Db2012al00626_werk_china_1055x500

The opening of the new Shanghai Volkswagen (SVW) plant in Yizheng, Eastern China, with an annual production capacity of around 300,000 vehicles, demonstrates the Group’s huge commitment to the Chinese growth market.

“The new factory is one of the most eco-friendly plants in the Volkswagen Group. We will play a major role in shaping the future of China as a car manufacturing location through modern technologies and new production methods,” declared Prof. Dr. Jochem Heizmann, Member of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG, who was designated to take charge of the newly created Group division “China”.

He also praised the fruitful collaboration with Chinese partners throughout the joint venture to build the factory, which actually resulted in the early opening of the plant. Initially the Polo will be built at Yizheng, the second location for this model in China, providing greater production flexibility.

Had my 2003 VW Beetle serviced Wednesday, 9/12/12. Alternator problem was quickly identified and repaired. Outstanding service received. There was an employee outside when I arrived early in the morning before the office was opened. He helped assure I had what I needed to complete the service request and asked if I would be needing a ride. I didn’t need a ride but the offer was nice. Great experience. Thanks

Volkswagen GTI Carbon: VW adds lightness to a limited-edition hot hatch

422774004

The 2014 Volkswagen Golf was designed to be lightweight, but VW apparently isn’t done shedding pounds. A new report from Autocar suggests the company is working on a sporty GTI model made of carbon fiber and aluminum. This “GTI Carbon” will weigh less than 2,500 pounds and test VW’s ability to mass produce lightweight materials.

The next Golf, due in calendar year 2013, switches to Volkswagen’s new MQB architecture, so it gets a chassis made of hot-formed ultra high strength steel. To trim weight even further, the GTI Carbon will have an aluminum floor, windshield frame, and firewall. Carbon fiber will replace the metal roof and hood. Potentially, the GTI Carbon could weigh just 2,475 pounds; 500 pounds less than today’s GTI.

Cars need to lose weight, and not just to maintain their girlish figures. Weight is the enemy of every form of automotive performance: acceleration, braking, handling, even fuel economy. That’s why Lotus Cars founder Colin Chapman’s motto was “simplify, and add lightness.”

The current GTI will do 0 to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds, but the GTI Carbon’s lightweight body could drop that time down into the 5.0 second range. The aluminum and carbon fiber will also improve fuel economy; why do you think Volkswagen went to such great lengths to lighten the regular Golf, which is not a performance car?

Volkswagen isn’t the first company to use carbon fiber and aluminum in a car; carbon fiber has been used in everything from the McLaren F1 to the BMW M3. What is interesting about the GTI Carbon is that it is a normal car, and it could be the first step toward mass-production of lightweight materials in cars.

Volkswagen is reportedly working on new production techniques for the GTI Carbon. To make the car’s carbon fiber pieces, technicians will drape two layers of the material over a thin sheet of steel, which can be welded to the body.

For the aluminum, VW will rivet pieces to the steel chassis (the same technique used by Jaguar and the makers of World War II fighter planes) or use adhesives. Different metals cannot be welded together, so incorporating aluminum into a car’s internal structure has always been a challenge.

If it wanted to show off its ability to weld aluminum or bake carbon fiber, Volkswagen could have built a small batch of production cars with bespoke chassis and bodies. Instead, the company decided to add the materials to its most popular model, which is a great way to popularize them.

We shouldn’t be congratulating VW just yet though, because the GTI Carbon is more of an experiment than a production item. The regular GTI may be a great affordable performance car, but don’t expect its carbon-clad sibling to be cheap. It will debut sometime after the regular Golf, and will only be built in small batches.

Still, if Volkswagen learns anything from the GTI Carbon, we could be looking at a future where carbon fiber and aluminum aren’t just for supercars and fighter planes.

Tips for keeping your VW looking brand new

Exterior

Keep it shiny and like new.

A clean car says a lot about its owner. But beyond first impressions, regular care of your vehicle’s exterior can help increase its longevity and value. So take a second to think about what you want to see—and take good care of your Volkswagen.

Tip: For a thorough cleaning of your car’s headlights, try 3M Headlight Restoration System or Lens Renewal Kit, available at your dealer.
General

Remove any leaves and other debris that may have accumulated underneath your wipers and under your hood. Walk around your car to check for any chips or scratches in the paint—pay special attention to the bottom and front of your car.

Tip: Even the smallest chip could become a rust spot if it’s not properly taken care of. Visit your Service Consultant at your Volkswagen dealership for more information.
Rims & Wheels

Use a wheel brush to remove dirt with a gentle cleanser. Wash each wheel and tire one at a time and rinse thoroughly. Most car enthusiasts wash their rims and wheels before they start on the rest of the car. This way, any dirt that splashes onto the body of the car will be rinsed off in the main wash.
Paint Care & Preservation

Wash your car regularly—at least once or twice a month—to clean off things like bugs, bird droppings, or salt. If not washed off in time, any of these things can leave permanent stains.

Rinse your car thoroughly to remove any loose dirt. Then start at the top with a microfiber or soft cloth and a gentle car cleaner. Rinse your car frequently, especially in hot weather. And don’t forget to dry it completely to avoid water spots.

Additional protection like waxing is advisable at the latest when water no longer pearls off the clean paint. Try 3M Quick Wax, available at your dealer, for in-between touch-ups. We recommend applying our hard wax preservation twice a year, even if you regularly use a conventional wax preserver in an automatic car wash.

To help prevent paint from being damaged:

Do not treat matte-painted parts or plastic parts with polish or hard wax
Do not polish the vehicle paintwork in a sandy or dusty environment

Windows

Clean windows—inside and outside—are very important to safe driving. Anything that’s stuck on your windshield can severely obstruct your vision, especially in combination with glaring sunlight during the day or headlights at night.

Wash off any bug remains, bird droppings, mud, dirt, salt, and even water spots, to make sure you see what’s in front, at your sides, and behind you. We suggest 3M Glass Cleaner, available at your dealer. And don’t forget to periodically check that you have sufficient windshield wiper fluid.

VOLKSWAGEN UNVEILS SEVENTH-GENERATION GOLF IN BERLIN

Vwgtiedition35

Herndon, VA -  Volkswagen today unveiled the new Golf, its best-selling car, at a press conference in Berlin, Germany. This seventh-generation version of one of the world’s most popular cars is striking in that it offers more features, even better safety, and more performance than the outgoing vehicle, while breaking the cycle of being heavier than its predecessor.

Overcoming the weight spiral
Indeed, the latest Golf is up to 220 pounds lighter than the outgoing car, thanks to careful focus on weight savings in all aspects of the car’s construction, from the electrical architecture through to the engines and the body-in-white. The air conditioning unit is, for example, six pounds lighter than the old car’s; the seats have shed 15 pounds; and the body-in-white is 51 pounds lighter. One major reason for the bodyshell’s weight loss is the extensive use of high- and ultra-high strength steels. The share of the high-strength steels overall has gone from 66 percent in the previous Golf to 80 percent in the new one. Of this, the share of ultra-high-strength steel has gone from six to 28 percent.

Better fuel efficiency

One benefit of lowering the Golf’s weight is better fuel economy: the European-market 1.4 TSI® that uses a 140-horsepower, turbocharged, 1.4-liter engine fitted with cylinder de-activation gets a European Cycle combined fuel consumption figure of 49 mpg, while the base 105-horsepower TDI® Clean Diesel engine delivers 62 mpg on the EC combined cycle.

Longer, lower, wider

The new Golf is 2.2 inches longer than the old car, with an overall length of 167.5 inches. Similarly, the wheelbase has grown by 2.3 inches to 103.8 inches. Since the front wheels are now located 1.7 inches further forward, the proportions are sportier, the crash structure is improved, and the interior package further optimized. The new car is 0.8 inches lower and 0.5 inches wider than the old car.

Improved interior
The new Golf is more spacious, with a passenger compartment that is 0.6 inches longer than before, giving 0.6 inches more rear kneeroom. Shoulder room is improved by 1.2 inches in both the back and front of the car. Cargo capacity has also been enhanced, while the load area is more accessible.

A key feature of the interior is a new infotainment system, which incorporates a five-inch touchscreen, even on entry-level European models. At the top end, the Golf features a navigation system which has a large, eight-inch touchscreen.

We had gone to another VW dealer in the area and had several problems. 1. Our salesperson was trying to work two customers at the same time while other salespeople were sitting around waiting for customers. This meant we spent a lot of time waiting for him to return to assist us. 2. The sticker at the other dealer had a 'Value-Added Fee' tacked on to the final price that then gave them about $2500 extra on the sticker. 3. The other dealer attempted to low-ball the trade-in value of our vehicle ($5000 less than trade-in value from Kelly Blue Book).

So, we drove out to Checkered Flag VW. Upon arrival we eagerly met by a salesperson that worked exclusively with us. He introduced the Sales Manager early in the visit. The sticker prices from the manufacturer were the same, but there were NO 'Value-Added Fees' attached. The salesperson spent several hours with us to help us find the exact car (from their large inventory) for us. Then we sat down with him and the Sales Manager to discuss the pricing, trade-in, and options. We came to a reasonable agreement that was close to the Kelly Blue Book value, while still coming down from the MSRP.

Result: We drove home with a new car and a very happy customer experience. Thank you Argo, Matt, and Checkered Flag VW.
